UN Sustainable Development Goals

At Isabelle Pennington-Edmead, we believe fashion has a responsibility to consider the people who make our clothes, the communities around us and the natural resources we depend upon.

Our sustainability approach is guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), 17 interconnected goals established as a global framework for creating a more sustainable and equitable future.

As a small, independent fashion brand, we recognise that we cannot address every global challenge. Instead, we focus on the areas where our design, production and business practices can make a meaningful contribution.

Below, we outline how our current practices relate to each of the 17 Goals.

01: No Poverty

Supporting fair work and sustainable livelihoods

We believe responsible fashion begins with the people who make our clothes.

Our garments are produced in the UK under fair working conditions. We work with skilled makers and manufacturers, with an emphasis on fair pay, respectful working relationships and long-term partnerships.

By supporting skilled employment and responsible production within our supply chain, we contribute to more secure livelihoods for the people involved in making our clothing.

What we're doing:

  • Producing garments in the UK
  • Supporting skilled makers and independent craftspeople
  • Paying makers fairly
  • Building long-term supplier relationships
  • Maintaining close oversight of our supply chain
  • Supporting minority-owned leadership and entrepreneurship

02: Zero Hunger

Considering the relationship between fashion, agriculture and livelihoods

Fashion does not directly address food security, but we recognise the connection between sustainable livelihoods, responsible resource use and the agricultural systems from which many textile fibres originate.

We use certified organic cotton and consider the agricultural origins of our materials when making sourcing decisions.

This is an area where we recognise there is more work to do, and we are exploring opportunities for future community and food-security partnerships.

What we're doing:

  • Using certified organic cotton
  • Considering the agricultural origins of our materials
  • Supporting fair wages and stable livelihoods
  • Exploring future community-based initiatives

03: Good Health & Well-Being

Creating healthier relationships with clothing

The health of people and the health of our environment are closely connected.

We select lower-impact and certified materials where possible and use GOTS-certified inks. We also consider the potential impact of fibres and production processes on makers, customers and ecosystems.

Our emphasis on longevity, repair and considered consumption encourages a slower relationship with clothing rather than constant replacement.

What we're doing:

  • Using certified and lower-impact fabrics
  • Using GOTS-certified inks
  • Considering microplastic pollution when selecting fibres
  • Supporting safe and respectful working environments
  • Designing garments to be worn for longer
  • Encouraging repair and upcycling

04: Quality Education

Sharing knowledge and preserving craft

We believe sustainability requires knowledge.

Through talks, conversations and our approach to design, we share knowledge around circular design, sustainable materials, garment care and responsible consumption.

We also value the skills of UK makers and independent craftspeople, helping to support traditional knowledge and craftsmanship within fashion.

What we're doing:

  • Sharing knowledge about sustainable fashion
  • Exploring circular design and repurposed materials
  • Communicating openly about materials and production
  • Supporting skilled UK makers
  • Encouraging customers to care for, repair and extend the life of their clothing

05: Gender Equality

Creating opportunities for women

Isabelle Pennington-Edmead is a female-founded and minority-owned brand, and creating opportunities for women is an important part of our approach.

We support women makers and craftspeople within our UK supply chain and collaborate with female creatives, stylists and entrepreneurs.

We believe the industry behind fashion should provide fair opportunities, while clothing itself should offer confidence, comfort and self-expression.

What we're doing:

  • Female-founded and minority-owned leadership
  • Supporting women makers and craftspeople
  • Fair pay and respectful working conditions
  • Collaborating with female creatives and entrepreneurs
  • Creating opportunities for women within our network

06: Clean Water & Sanitation

Considering the impact of textiles on water

Textile production can place pressure on water resources and contribute to water pollution.

We therefore consider water and chemical impact when selecting materials and production partners.

Our use of certified organic cotton, TENCEL™ fibres, EcoVero™ viscose and GOTS-certified inks forms part of our effort to make more responsible choices throughout production.

What we're doing:

  • Using certified organic cotton
  • Using TENCEL™ fibres from responsibly managed forests
  • Using EcoVero™ viscose
  • Using GOTS-certified inks
  • Considering water stewardship when selecting suppliers
  • Considering chemical impact when sourcing materials

07: Affordable & Clean Energy

Beginning our transition towards lower-impact energy

We are working to reduce the energy impact of our operations.

Our studio is partly powered by solar energy, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. Our UK-based production model also helps reduce transportation associated with longer international supply chains.

Our small-batch and made-to-order approach further helps avoid unnecessary production and the energy associated with unwanted stock.

What we're doing:

  • Partly powering our studio with solar energy
  • Producing locally in the UK
  • Working in small batches
  • Offering made-to-order production
  • Continuing to explore lower-impact production systems

08: Decent Work & Economic Growth

Putting people at the heart of production

We believe economic sustainability is inseparable from environmental sustainability.

Every garment we produce is made in the UK, with close oversight of our supply chain. We work with skilled makers and prioritise fair pay, safe working environments and respectful relationships.

Supporting skilled UK production also helps maintain valuable knowledge and employment within the local fashion and manufacturing sector.

What we're doing:

  • UK-based garment production
  • Fair pay for skilled makers
  • Safe and ethical working conditions
  • Long-term relationships with manufacturers and craftspeople
  • Close supply-chain oversight

09: Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure

Rethinking how clothing systems are built

We approach innovation as a way of improving how fashion is structured, not simply how garments are made.

We explore how design decisions can reduce waste at source and create more efficient, thoughtful production systems, including through pattern development, material use and alternative construction methods.

Working with small-scale UK manufacturing partners also allows us to maintain closer relationships and support more resilient local production.

What we're doing:

  • Developing more efficient design and production systems
  • Working with small-scale UK manufacturers
  • Reducing complexity in our supply chain
  • Exploring alternative construction methods
  • Improving material use from the design stage
  • Supporting resilient local production infrastructure

10: Reduced Inequalities

Creating space for greater representation

Representation matters.

As a minority-owned fashion brand, we understand the importance of visibility and opportunity within an industry where not everyone has historically had equal representation.

We seek to create opportunities for diverse makers, creatives and collaborators while using our platform to contribute to conversations around representation and inclusion.

What we're doing:

  • Minority-owned leadership
  • Championing diverse representation
  • Creating opportunities for diverse makers and creatives
  • Working with ethical UK manufacturers
  • Building inclusive collaborations
  • Celebrating individuality through our collections

11: Sustainable Cities & Communities

Keeping production connected to place

We believe fashion can contribute to stronger local communities when production is kept closer to home.

Our garments are produced in the UK, supporting skilled makers and maintaining connections with local manufacturing.

We also design seasonless clothing and explore repair, upcycling and rental partnerships to help extend the life of garments rather than encouraging constant consumption.

What we're doing:

  • UK-based production
  • Supporting local manufacturing and craftsmanship
  • Designing seasonless garments
  • Supporting repair and upcycling
  • Working with circular fashion partners
  • Exploring shared consumption through rental

12: Responsible Consumption & Production

Extending the life of every material we use

We consider what happens to materials before, during and after a garment exists, with the aim of keeping resources in use for as long as possible.

We design with longevity in mind and actively reduce waste by reusing offcuts, repurposing surplus materials and designing out excess wherever possible.

We also support repair, resale and rental systems to help garments stay in use for longer and consider end-of-life recovery when developing products.

What we're doing:

  • Designing garments for long-term wear and repair
  • Reusing offcuts and surplus materials
  • Reducing waste throughout production
  • Supporting repair, resale and rental
  • Considering end-of-life recovery
  • Keeping materials in circulation for as long as possible

13: Climate Action

Reducing our environmental impact

Climate action is closely linked to how we design, produce and consume clothing.

We track our carbon footprint using Carbon Sink and offset through Ecologi tree planting. Our studio is partly powered by solar energy, while UK-based production helps reduce transport associated with longer supply chains.

We also select materials with environmental impact in mind, including organic cotton, recycled fibres and deadstock. Our circular approach extends material life through repair, upcycling and reuse, while our packaging is recycled and recyclable.

What we're doing:

  • Tracking our carbon footprint using Carbon Sink
  • Supporting tree planting through Ecologi
  • Using solar energy in our studio
  • Producing garments in the UK
  • Selecting organic, recycled and deadstock materials
  • Reusing offcuts and supporting repair and upcycling
  • Using recycled and recyclable packaging
  • Designing for longevity through made-to-order production

14: Life Below Water

Considering the impact of textiles on our oceans

Synthetic fibres, plastic pollution and chemical runoff can contribute to pressure on marine ecosystems.

We therefore consider microplastic pollution when selecting fabrics and seek to avoid unnecessary synthetic fibre use where possible.

Our new swimwear and cover-ups collection uses recycled textiles made from discarded plastic bottles, giving existing plastic materials a second life while reducing reliance on virgin resources.

We also use GOTS-certified inks and favour lower-impact production and material choices that can help reduce chemical pollution and environmental runoff.

What we're doing:

  • Using recycled textiles made from plastic bottles in our new collection
  • Considering microplastic pollution when choosing fibres
  • Avoiding unnecessary synthetic fibres where possible
  • Using GOTS-certified inks
  • Reducing reliance on harmful dyes and chemicals
  • Considering environmental runoff when sourcing materials
  • Designing garments for longevity and repeated wear

15: Life on Land

Considering the origins of our materials

Every textile begins somewhere, often with a crop, a forest or another natural resource.

We therefore consider the environmental origins of our materials and prioritise responsibly sourced fibres where possible.

Organic cotton and TENCEL™ fibres from responsibly managed wood sources form part of our material selection, alongside certified materials and lower-impact dyes.

What we're doing:

  • Using certified organic cotton
  • Using TENCEL™ fibres from responsibly managed wood sources
  • Selecting certified materials
  • Considering biodiversity and ecosystem impact
  • Exploring lower-impact dyes and production methods

16: Peace, Justice & Strong Institutions

Building our business on transparency and accountability

Responsible fashion requires trust.

We maintain close oversight of our UK supply chain and aim to communicate openly about our materials and production processes.

We work with partners who share our commitment to fair treatment, safe working environments and responsible business practices. As a minority-owned business, we also believe equitable representation is part of creating a fairer fashion system.

What we're doing:

  • Maintaining close supply-chain oversight
  • Working with ethical production partners
  • Supporting fair treatment and safe working environments
  • Communicating transparently about materials and production
  • Building partnerships around shared values
  • Championing more equitable representation

17: Partnerships for the Goals

Working together for a more circular fashion system

We believe meaningful change cannot happen in isolation.

Partnerships allow us to extend the life of garments, share resources and develop new approaches to circular fashion.

Our collaboration with HURR supports rental and shared consumption, allowing garments to be worn by more people and helping to extend their useful life.

We will continue to seek partners, suppliers, makers and organisations whose values align with our commitment to people and planet.

What we're doing:

  • Collaborating with circular fashion platforms
  • Working with HURR to support garment rental
  • Building relationships with responsible suppliers
  • Supporting skilled makers and craftspeople
  • Developing partnerships around sustainability
  • Exploring new opportunities for collaboration

Our Commitment Is Ongoing

The Sustainable Development Goals give us a framework for thinking about the wider impact of our business, from the people who make our clothes to the materials we use and the communities and ecosystems connected to fashion.

We do not see sustainability as a finished checklist.

As Isabelle Pennington-Edmead develops, we will continue to review our practices, identify where we can improve and build new partnerships that allow us to make a greater contribution.

We believe better fashion is built through better choices; made carefully, collectively and with the future in mind.

Our SDG mapping reflects our current practices and areas of development. We will continue to update this page as our commitments evolve.
